Shonda Chase, RN, MSN Explains New Skin Treatment Technology

Lately you may have been hearing about the Venus Viva™ technology. It is a subject developing increasing buzz in the media. So what is it and what is it good for?

Venus Viva™ has been recently approved by the FDA and is a technology that utilizes radio frequency delivered in a specific pattern. It is a two-tiered treatment process employing both fractional and pulsed electromagnetic fields. This results in a precise dermal heating process. Patients report little to no discomfort from the process. Radio frequency is something that has been used in medicine for many years. The radio frequency is used in way to transfer energy through the epidermis, to the dermis. This is done to generate heat and initiate skin change. The process is done to stimulate the rebuilding of collagen and elastin to initiate the process of skin rejuvenation.

Shonda Chase, RN, MSN, Aesthetic Director, Revive Wellness Centers in Southern California puts it much simpler, “The new VIVA radio frequency technology safely delivers RF energy to increase collagen and elastin production in the deep dermis layers of the skin…”

Some of the skin conditions this technology is used to treat include fine lines and moderate wrinkles, acne scars, large pores, pigmentation irregularities and stretch marks. Benefits over some of the older technologies include more rapid results and shorter recovery time than traditional methods that involve abrading the skin.

Venus Viva™ is said to be safe for all skin types with minimal discomfort.

Another factor that makes this type of treatment attractive is the cost effectiveness. As Shonda told us, “Twenty years ago 80% of cosmetic procedures were surgical and 20% were non-surgical. Last year 20% of cosmetic procedures were surgical and 80% were non-surgical. Treatments like the new VIVA radio frequency technology rejuvenate the skin in about an hour. Resulting in skin that is healthier and younger looking without surgery or downtime. Maximum results are achieved with 3-4 treatments, one month apart and typically cost around $800 per treatment.”

Other treatments that are used for the some of the conditions that Viva treats include chemical peels and dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion methods involve abrading the outer layers of the skin so that the dermis is replaced with newer cells. Whereas chemical peels involve the application of chemicals to the surface to essentially dissolve away the outer layers of the skin. Both of these options are harsh in comparison and involve more downtime and redness than the RF energy treatments. Another difference with this technology is that it involves heating the deeper levels of the dermis to generate positive changes at these deeper skin levels for more youthful skin.
