Flight Attendants Tap into Charity to Educate and Feed Ethiopians

Flight attendant, Trish Hack-Rubinstein, and President of Fresh and Green Academy, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York, is determined to make a positive difference in the lives of homeless children and their mothers on the streets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Rubinstein started the non-profit organization to ensure the continuation and success of Fresh and Green Academy, a school for disadvantaged children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Fresh and Green Academy, Inc., provides the Academy’s 154 students with daily meals, a well-rounded education, and clean water.

“One of the biggest challenges Fresh and Green Academy face is raising sufficient funds to support the ever growing numbers of children on a month by month basis. It is hoped that this annual “Dancing With The Stews” (As in Flight Attendants) Fundraiser will play a significant role in achieving that goal.

The flight attendants have been rehearsing for ten weeks with their professional partners at Arthur Murray Dance Center in Manhattan. As in last year’s event, guests will be able to meet celebrity dancers, watch some great ballroom dancing, mingle and have fun while helping the children of Fresh and Green Academy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,” says Rubinstein. The money raised will be sent directly to the school and will be used to feed and educate the children.”

The late Teresa of Calcutta, M.C., commonly known as Mother Teresa and recipient of numerous honours including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize echoes Rubinstein’s statements on the importance of helping others less fortunate than ourselves.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” – Mother Teresa.”

The “Dancing With The Stews” fundraiser is a fun, dynamic event that will feature a dance show with Flight Attendants paired with World-Class Champion Dancers competing against each other to raise money for the Academy in Ethiopia. Last year, over $22,000 was raised at the first of these annual events. This year, the goal is to double that amount. Over 100 guests attended and many more watched the live online stream from all over the world!

Friends of Fresh and Green Academy was started by a group of flight attendants in 2008 and continues to have high flight attendant involvement, including board members, their friends and family. Several times a year, volunteer flight attendants travel to the Academy while paying for all of their own expenses to bring supplies, spend time with the children and their mothers, and work side by side with the director of the school.

“I wanted to share the incredible experience I was lucky enough to have with DWTS in May of 2013. My name is Ann Marie Longo Goldman and I was a competitor last year. What an amazing experience! I was matched up with pro dancer Frank Perez. He was a perfect match! He patiently taught me the Mambo. What looked so easy was not! He had the patience of a saint! I made amazing new friendships, learned so much about what a wonderful world the dance community is (just like our airline family), and all at the same time helped raise money for a great cause! Thank you for letting me be a part of this great event and I look forward to watching DWTS 2014!”
