Dr. Sonya Johnson knew she wanted to be a doctor when she was still young and in high school. During her time in medical school, she realized she wanted to achieve a work/life balance, as well as her dream of being a physician. Becoming a skilled dermatologist has allowed her to practice medicine, have face-to-face patient time, perform surgeries and, at times, save lives – all while still having time for her family.
Dr. Johnson proudly opened her own practice, Dermatology Associates, in 1999, in Indianapolis, Indiana and has served her community since with dedication.
Sonya absolutely loves being a dermatologist. What she is able to do for her patients is, at times, life-altering. Sonya offers a diverse set of services for her patients. She can help with skin conditions, such as rashes, acne, eczema, rosacea, and infections, as well as more serious conditions, such as skin cancer.
She also offers cosmetic services and products that can help her clients look and feel better about their appearance, whether it be dermal fillers and Botox for wrinkles or treatments for discoloration of the skin.
The young, teenage population sees her for help with acne and discoloration – pigmentation issues resulting from acne, as well as other procedures and medications.
A 35 to 60-year-old, professional female group of patients see her to enhance their natural beauty they already have. As professionals in Corporate America or business owners, they don’t necessarily want to look younger, as much as they want to look good for their age. Common procedures which she does for this population include cosmetic work, such as Botox fillers or lasers to treat skin conditions such as unwanted hairs, sun damage, dilated pores, and blood vessels. She also offers some anti-aging products for this population.
Another service which Sonya provides in her dermatology practice is annual skin examinations where she looks for changes in moles, precancerous lesions or skin cancer. The group of patients who make use of this service tends to be 30 to 80 years of age and are both male and female, and of all cultures. Catching a precancerous skin condition can often quite literally save someone’s life by early detection and surgery.
Another one of Dr. Johnson’s specialties is working with African-American women between the ages of 30 to 50 who are experiencing hair loss. She states, “The problem is by the time they visit the office, their scalps demonstrates considerable damage. The goal is to try and determine the cause for their hair loss, prevent further damage, and regrow their hair.”
Dr. Johnson is pleased to have acquired a new piece of equipment for her practice recently, a PEARL Fractional Laser. This laser works specifically for women and is used to resurface skin, being gentle enough to be used even around the eye area.
This laser helps to rejuvenate skin as it smoothes lines and wrinkles, improves or corrects dark spots and redness, as well as making skin smoother and more youthful. The PEARL Fractional Laser stimulates the body’s own natural process for creating newer healthier collagen.
Dr. Johnson works with skin, nails and hair – always making sure that her patients are healthy and looking good, as well.
