After completing his residency at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, Dr. John Zannis decided that he wanted to establish his plastic surgery practice near North Carolina’s Crystal Coast in New Bern. He has been helping patients at the Zannis Center for Plastic Surgery in New Bern since 2010. Patients from across the United States and around the world have travelled to New Bern to experience makeovers performed by Dr. Zannis and he recently formalized the fly-in program to provide the best care while reducing stress for patients.
“Our out-of-town patients have told us they are interested in a makeover vacation where they can recuperate after surgery in comfort and privacy near the coast,” said Zannis. “We have perfected the protocol for treating fly-in patients, including a visit to our medspa and overnight accommodations at one of New Bern’s historic bed & breakfasts. Patients also find that the cost of surgery in Eastern North Carolina provides substantial savings compared to large metro areas in the United States and the cost difference provides another benefit for our fly-in patients.”
The first step for a fly-in patient is a virtual consultation with Zannis. The patient completes an online questionnaire covering the patient’s goals and questions and the patient uploads photos of the body area of concern. After Zannis evaluates the information and photos, he schedules a phone consultation with the patient to go over the details of the individual situation, answer patient questions and to provide a quotation for the procedure. Once the patient has decided to pursue surgery with The Zannis Center for Plastic Surgery, the patient receives a packet that includes all of the details of the procedure, instructions for the weeks and days leading up to the surgery and information related to recovery and what to expect after surgery.
Fly-in patients are advised to arrive one to three days prior to surgery for a face-to-face consultation, to have any last minute questions answered and to receive medication prescriptions for use after surgery so they can be filled in advance. For some procedures such as breast augmentation, the patient can return home on the day following surgery. Facelifts, abdominoplasty and certain other procedures require a next day follow-up. If there are drainage tubes with an abdominoplasty, removal needs to be scheduled seven days following surgery.
